ELC ‘D’ stands for domination – Clayton scores 16 to lead Midgettes
ESTHERVILLE — For the second game in a row, Estherville Lincoln Central’s defense set the tone as the Midgettes won 46-34 over LeMars on Tuesday.
Except for a short stretch in the third quarter when the Bulldogs hit four 3-pointers, ELC kept the visitors from scoring.
“We didn’t play the way we wanted to and didn’t have the intensity we would’ve liked,” said ELC assistant coach Jenny Nitchals.
The Midgettes got off to a slow start compared to Friday’s game against Emmetsburg, but still led 6-2 with 3:50 remaining in the first quarter.
Christa Clayton, who scored four of the six points, picked up her second foul shortly thereafter and went to the bench, but baskets by Landra Lapka and Taylar Jacobson pushed the lead to 10-2.
However, LeMars hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 10-5.
The Midgettes started the second quarter on a 10-2 run with four points each from Clayton and Melanie Bandow along with a basket from Jensen.
LeMars finally scored again and hit two free throws before the half to trail 22-11.
ELC scored on its first three possessions of the second half with baskets by Clayton Jensen and Bandow before LeMars’ hit their first 3-pointer.
The Midgettes scored the next six points to push the lead to 34-14 when the Bulldogs hit back-to-back 3-pointers.
After baskets by Bandow and Jensen, the Bulldogs’ Cassie Lausen hit her third 3-pointer, but LeMars still trailed 38-26 to start the final frame.
ELC coach Brad Leonard told his players to keep playing defense between quarters and the Midgettes responded by holding the visitors to two points until late in the period.
Clayton led ELC with 16 points, five rebounds and four steals. Bandow and Jensen each ended the night with eight points.
ELC (6-2, 4-1) travels to Spirit Lake next Tuesday.
The ELC junior varsity beat LeMars 40-34.
