Iowa Lakes 90, Miinnesota West 51 – Lakers fly away from Bluejays
ESTHERVILLE — Sporting a different lineup, the Iowa Lakes men’s basketball team still had little trouble with Minnesota West on Wednesday.
The Lakers built a 30-point halftime lead and cruised to a 90-51 victory over the Bluejays.
“We want to get everyone on the same page,” said Iowa Lakes coach Troy Larson. “We have some inconsistencies in some players not giving what we wanted.”
Two newcomers to the starting lineup were sophomores Zach Fenceroy and David Fox.
The Lakers scored their first two points Fox received the ball in the post and was surrounded by a host of Minnesota West defenders and found a wide-open Fenceroy cutting underneath the basket.
Fenceroy later hit a 3-pointer as part of a 9-2 run to open the game.
Fox also scored his first bucket of the night as the Lakers took a 13-4 lead with only four minutes gone in the game.
The Bluejays kept the deficit to single digits at 20-12 when Jeff Clark-Neal started a 10-0 run with contributions from Jimmie Marshall, Jeremy Winters and Fenceroy.
Dalton Jones’ second 3-pointer of the game gave the Lakers a 33-14 lead with about five minutes remaining in the half.
The Lakers pushed that lead to 54-22 by the break thanks to some solid inside play by Joe Knoer and Winters.
Fenceroy had all 12 of his points in the first half while Winters, 6-8, 270-pound freshman from Monona scored 10 of his game-high 20 points in the opening 20 minutes.
Minnesota West played even with the Lakers much of the second half, but the Lakers put more distance down the stretch.
Of those that played, coach Larson said, “We guarded. We played hard and offensively we got some good looks at the basket.”
Iowa Lakes (7-3) will play at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16 against Southeastern Community College. The game will be played at the Knapp Center at Drake University and be televised on Mediacom Statewide.
