Eagles fly past Lakers

By Staff | Dec 18, 2007

ESTHERVILLE — What a difference a few days and a new opponent can make.

Three days after routing Minnesota West 98-43, the Iowa Lakes women’s basketball team found a much more difficult task in taking on a Kirkwood team rated No. 11 in the NJCAA Division II poll.

Although the Eagles came to Estherville with a 5-4 record, their losses were all to Division I opponents.

Kirkwood used full-court pressure to slow up Iowa Lake, causing turnovers and creating easy baskets for the Eagles.

When the Lakers worked the ball across half-court, the 30-second shot clock was winding down forcing them to take a quick, lower-percentage shot.

“Defensively we were out-played,” said Iowa Lakes coach Brian Radtke. “We also weren’t ready for the pressure.”

While the Lakers’ defense kept the game close early on, the home team had only scored six points by the 10-minute-mark.

Iowa Lakes trailed 25-6 when they finally scored six straight points–two free throws by Shanda Novak, a basket by Kym Zitzner and one by Karissa Kramer.

However when Sam Widmer and Kramer hit back-to-back 3-pointers around the 3-minute mark, the Lakers trailed 33-18.

Trailing 35-20 to start the second half, Zitzner and Novak scored the first two baskets to cut the lead to 11, but the Eagles then went on a 20-2 run over the next six minutes to put the game out of reach.

Only Samantha Boje reached double digits with 10 points with most coming from the free throw line late in the game where she was 8-for-8.

Kramer had eight points, five assists and two steals.
