Iowa Lakes unable to hold off Blackhawks

By Staff | Dec 18, 2007

ESTHERVILLE — The Iowa Lakes men’s basketball team couldn’t hang onto its seven-point halftime lead against Southeastern Community College on Sunday.

The Blackhawks rallied in the second half, took a late five-point lead and held on for a 59-57 victory on a game broadcast state-wide on Mediacom from the home of the Drake Bulldogs, the Knapp Center in Des Moines.

The Lakers looked solid in the first-half behind the play of Jimmie Marshall and Jeremy Winters.

Winters, a 6-8, 270-pound sophomore from Monona, reached double digits for the second consecutive game and had 10 of his 12 points in the first half. At one point, the Lakers went on a 10-0 run to take a 30-17 lead.

The Blackhawks cut into the lead before the break, but the Lakers led 32-25.

The Lakers struggled to rn their offense in the second half as Southeastern came up with a few blocked shots to help turn the tide. Turnovers also proved to be a problem for the team from Estherville.

Marshall led all scorers with 22 points and also had a team-high five steals.

Neither team shot well from the charity stripe. Southeastern was 16-of-33 from the free throw line while the Lakers were 10-of-19. Both teams were 3-of-14 from 3-point range.

Iowa Lakes out-rebounded Southeaster 46-36 led by Jackson Parr with nine and Winters with eight.

Iowa Lakes enters the holiday break with a 7-4 record and returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 3, against Vermilion at the Central Lakes Classic in Brainerd, Minn.
