Payback for Howard at Spencer – Freshman avenges loss to place third
SPENCER — A third-place finish by freshman Nate Howard highlighted the Estherville Lincoln Central wrestling team’s day at the Spencer Tournament on Saturday.
Wrestling at 160 pounds, Howard had a dubious start to the day as he was pinned by LeMars’ Ben Beitelspacher in 59 seconds. Howard lost 5-3 to the Bulldog wrestler just two days earlier.
In the consolation bracket, Howard came back by pinning Mason City’s Alex Mariner in 5:25 and he then won a 3-1 overtime decision over Clear Lakes’ Spencer Rollefson.
In the third-place match, Howard faced Beitelspacher once again. This time, Howard pulled out a 3-2 victory.
Three ELC wrestlers placed fifth. Kyle Tribby (112), Joel Christensen (130) and Spenser Schichtl (215) all posted 2-2 records.
Tribby started the day by pinning Akron-Westfield’s Alex Waterbury in 3:25 before losing by fall to eventual champion Joe Colon of Clear Lake in 58 seconds.
In the consolation bracket. Tribby lost by fall to Mason City’s Tiffany Sluik in 4:31 before coming back in the fifth place-match with another pin over Waterbury in 1:24.
Christensen also lost by fall in his first match in 2:4 to Mason City’s Doug Milbrath. In the consolation bracket, Christensen lost 5-2 to Clear Lake’s Jake Kopriva before winning an 8-5 decision over Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley’s Grant Scholten.
Schichtl lost his first match by fall to Akron-Westfield’s David Hecht in 1:25. He came back with a 9-2 decision over LeMars’ Andrew Pritcher then lost to Spencer’s Tyler Kacmerynski in 54 seconds.
In the fifth-place match, Schichtl won 5-3 over Twin River Valley’s Bryce Jenson.
At 135 pounds, Ryan Kaltved went 1-3 and placed sixth.
Other ELC wrestlers competing were Nathan Spoo (119), Seth Shatto (140), Tyson Enerson (145) and Dillon Ford (189).
In junior varsity wrestling at the Spencer Tournament, Andrew Schmidt (125), DJ Peterson (135) and Michael Dieterich (152) all posted 1-1 records. Riley Edwards (16) was 2-1 and Zach Wycoff (171) was 0-3.
ELC returns to action in the new year on Thursday, Jan. 3. The Midgets take on Spirit Lake Park and Western Christian in a double dual at Spirit Lake.
