Midgettes roll over Bulldogs – Larson scores 13, Olesen notches double-double
ESTHERVILLE — While Estherville Lincoln Central’s offense seems to suffer at times, there’s nothing wrong with the Midgettes’ defense.
ELC held Lake Mills to six points or less per quarter on the way to a 54-19 victory on Thursday.
The Bulldogs played a box-and-one defense on Christa Clayton, ELC’s leading scorer, and held her to eight points, but the all-district player didn’t need her usual numbers.
Taylor Larson came off the bench to score 13 points and Alex Olesen had 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench in the victory.
ELC put full-court pressure on the Bulldogs for three quarters.
In the first quarter, steals led to easy layups for Clayton as she scored six of her points in an 10-3 ELC run.
Landra Lapka, who also reached double digits with 10 points, had the other four points in the run.
Larson scored the final five points of the first quarter, knocking down two free throws and a 3-pointer as ELC led 15-5 after one quarter.
The second quarter saw both offenses struggle to score.
“It was a deal where everyone was looking for their own shot instead of looking for others,” said ELC coach Brad Leonard.
The Bulldogs converted a three-point play at one point to cut the deficit to 19-8, but a putback by Olesen and 3-pointer by Taylar Jacobson pushed the lead to 22-8.
Both teams managed just one free throw before half as ELC led 23-9.
The ELC defense held Lake Mills to just one point for a majority of the third quarter, building a 39-10 lead before the Bulldogs finally hit a shot.
ELC led 39-12 heading into the final frame.
The Midgettes (8-2, 5-1) travel to Cherokee tonight.
Coach Leonard said while the Braves don’t have a good record, ELC should still expect a tough matchup.
“they have three girls that can score in double digits and they throw a lot of different defenses at you,” he said.
