ELC rally falls short against Storm Lake

By Staff | Jan 12, 2008

STORM LAKE — After falling behind 28-8 in the first quarter, Estherville Lincoln Central could’ve folded up the tent and went home.

However, the Midgets kept after it and had the lead cut to 10 with 1 1/2 minutes remaining on a 3-pointer by Keith Fandel, 72-62.

ELC couldn’t make another shot though as the hosts won 75-62.

ELC coach Joey Grau said the Midgets struggled with double teams as they committed eight turnovers in the first period.

“We turned up the energy level and once we started cutting, the pressure eliminated itself,” he said.

ELC had the deficit cut to 15 when Caleb Caboth hit a long two-pointer at the halftime buzzer, 42-27.

The Tornadoes pushed the lead back above 20 to start the final frame with a 64-40 edge before ELC made a run.

Marcus Stangl scored 11 of his game-high 20 points in the first half and also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.

Caboth ended the night with 19 points while Matt Gruhlke had eight and Keith Fandel had seven. Dylan Sievert returned to the court and had five points and five rebounds in limited minutes. Kyle Grems had three points.

ELC (2-9, 0-7) will host Lakes Conference leader Spencer on Tuesday.
