Tigers roar past Mustangs
ARMSTRONG — The Armstrong-Ringsted girls basketball team was ready for the 1-2 punch of Class 1A No. 11 Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka.
What the Mustangs weren't ready for is four 3-pointers from Tiger freshman Paige Heesch WCLT took a 62-43 victory.
“We ran our game plan,” said A-R coach Steve Waldstein explaining the goal was to stop WCLT post player Stacy Schutjer, who is a couple inches over 6-feet, and Alyssa Schwartz.
“We took Stacy out of her game for three quarters,” he said.
Waldstein said he’d scouted WCLT four times and hadn’t seen Heesch make the shots she made on Friday.
Although A-R’s Morgan Grabinoski knocked down two 3-pointers in the first quarter, Heesch also had two and the Tigers led 19-14 after one quarter.
Heesch hit her third 3-pointer to start the second and a basket by Schwartz pushed the Tiger lead to 24-14.
A-R post Rosie Cheever answered with a basket finally, but then picked up her third foul and went to the bench for the final 5 1/2 minutes of the first half.
The Tigers pushed their lead to 14 points before A-R’s Megan Sanders and Michele Iris hit a couple shots to cut the lead back to 10, 35-25, at the break.
A-R had the deficit at eight, 40-32, when Heesch hit her four 3-pointer. The two teams played even in the third quarter. WCLT led 45-35 to start the final frame.
The Tigers spread the floor in the final quarter, forcing the Mustangs out of their zone defense into man-to-man. WCLT took advantage by getting the ball inside to Schutjer, who now faced one-on-one coverage.
She helped her team pull away and ended the night with 17 points. Schwartz had 19 points while Heesch had 15.
A-R was led by Cheever with 11 points while Iris had nine points and seven rebounds. Grabinoski had eight points.
A-R (4-6) returns to action Tuesday when they host Harris-Lake Park.
