ESTHERVILLE — A 23-0 run over a six-minute span in the first half was all the Iowa Lakes women needed to put visiting Southwestern away for a 85-59 win on Saturday.

Leading 15-7 with around 14 minutes left in the first half, the run started with a pair of free throws and basket by Shanda Novak. Point guard Samantha Boje knocked down a 3-pointer followed by a basket by Jynna Coyle and then a steal and layup by Karissa Kramer.

Hannah Downing, entering the game to give Novak a rest, converted a three-point play followed by three free throws from Kramer.

A pair of 3-pointers by Ricca Soper and Kristin Patterson completed the run before the undermanned Spartans finally scored with 8:11 left in the half as they trailed 38-9.

Southwestern, who only dressed seven players, had at least one player in foul trouble by this time,. The Lakers pulled back from their full-court pressure, though, and still led 51-21 heading into the break.

“We played good defense in the first half and the offense fed off that,” said Iowa Lakes coach Brian Radtke. “We were hitting our threes and taking care of the ball.

The visitors played even with Iowa Lakes in the second half, but were too far behind to make up the difference.

Iowa Lakes was 8-of-15 from 3-point range in the first half, but was 7-of-27 in the second half.

We lacked intensity in the second half and didn't go as hard,” Radtke said. “Our shots showed it.”

Novak led four Lakers in double digits with 15 points while Boje and Kramer each had 14 and Ricca Soper had 10.
