ELC unable to hang with No. 10 Spencer
ESTHERVILLE — Estherville Lincoln Central hung around with Class 3A No. 10 Spencer for a little over a quarter, before the Tigers pulled away for a 73-46 victory on Tuesday.
The Midgets held a brief lead when Kyle Grems scored the first basket of the game.
ELC trailed 8-5 after Matt Gruhlke hit a basket and 8-6 after a free throw by Caleb Caboth.
Then Spencer scored the final seven points of the quarter to lead 15-6.
Marcus Stangl hit the first two baskets of the second quarter. Two free throws and a basket by Grems cut the lead to 17-14 with 5:55 remaining.
ELC still trailed 19-16 after Collin Klingbeil put back a missed shot.
Spencer then began running, outscoring ELC 18-6 to end the half and lead 41-23.
ELC played even with the Tigers in the third quarter and trailed 59-39 to start the final frame.
Fandel led ELC with 12 points while Kyle Grems had 10. Stangl scored seven points while Gruhlke and Caboth each had five points and Dylan Sievert and Klingbeil each had two points.
ELC was 9-of-17 from the free throw line.
Spencer out-rebounded the Midgets 41-35. ELC was led by Sievert and Stangl with seven boards each.
ELC (2-10, 0-8) hosts Emmetsburg on Friday.
