Missed free throws, layups doom Mustangs

By Staff | Jan 18, 2008

ARMSTRONG — The Armstrong-Ringsted girls basketball team did two things that all coaches like to see–attacking the offensive boards and getting to the free throw line.

Unfortunately, the Mustangs struggled to put back in the missed shots and the foul shots against Twin River Valley. A-R was 8-of-25 from the free throw line.

Meanwhile, the Thunder also made its share of trips to the free throw line, making 19 of 28 and won 47-36 on Thursday.

“We just weren’t ready to play,” said A-R coach Steve Waldstein.

Despite the poor free throw shooting, the Mustangs still had opportunities overtake TRV.

The Thunder jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter which A-R was unable to surmount. A basket by Lisa Pelzer at the buzzer kept the lead within reach, 16-9.

Michele iris hit a jumper and Rosie Cheever knocked down her first two free throws as A-R cut the deficit to three, 16-13.

The remainder of the quarter featured several missed layups. The Mustangs made six trips to the line and made just one free throw, but still trailed just 22-14 at the break.

Brianne Gonzales opened the second half with a 3-pointer and knocked down another basket as A-R got back within three, 22-19 with 4:20 in the third quarter.

But both Gonzales and fellow starting guard Morgan Grabinoski picked up their fourth foul and went to the bench.

TRV pushed the lead back to eight before a basket by Iris cut the deficit to six, 34-28, to start the final frame.

Gonzales knocked down another 3-pointer and the Mustangs were within four at 36-32 with 5:46 remaining, but picked up her fifth foul a minute later.

The Thunder continued to make their free throws to put the win away.

Gonzales led A-R with 12 points while Iris had eight and Megan Sanders had six. Rosie Cheever pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds.

A-R (5-8) is on the road at Corwith-Wesley-Luverne today.
