Thunder rolls over A-R – TRV guards heat up in fourth quarter
ARMSTRONG — For three quarters, the Armstrong-Ringsted boys basketball team was again on the verge of its first win.
Leading 39-34 heading into the final quarter, TRV’s guards suddenly heated up from outside and the Thunder made their free throws when they needed to to pull out a 59-50 win.
A-R coach George Walker said the goal was to stop TRV’s post players–Brian Olson and Levi Trauger, who are both averaging double digits. The two were held to just 15 combined points.
“The guys we had out there worked hard,” said Walker. “But we gambled on their guards and we lost.”
A-R scored the first four points on a basket by Dillion McBride and two free throws by Tyler Tonderum.
The Thunder came back and used four free throws to tie the game at six. mcBride answered with two free throws and Elliot Kinnander knocked down a jumper to push the lead back to four, but TRV had the last basket of the quarter to cut the deficit to 10-8.
Kinnander hit the first basket of the second quarter, but the Thunder’s Trevor Peters knocked down a 3-pointer. TRV took its first lead and the two teams seesawed back and forth.
A-R took an 18-17 lead when Logan Anderson hit a jumper from the free throw line and then the
A-R tied the game at 20-20 on a nifty interior pass from Spencer Claussen to Kinnander.
TRV’s Brian Olson was then called for a technical foul with 1:11 remaining. Spencer Taylor knocked down two free throws and Kinnander scored on the next possession as A-R led by four, 24-20.
However Peters hit another 3-pointer and A-R’s lead was just one, 24-23, at halftime.
The Mustangs continued to play well in the third quarter, but to take a five-point lead.
A-R was led by Kinnander with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Craig Tigges finished with 10 points while McBride had eight and Tonderum had seven. Logan Anderson contributed six points, nine rebounds and a team-high five assists.
A-R (0-11) is on the road against Corwith-Wesley-Luverne tonight.
