Mustangs win at the buzzer – Iris hits game-winner; Leach sparks A-R off the bench

By Staff | Feb 2, 2008

CORWITH — Although Armstrong-Ringsted struggled to hit shots all night, senior Michele Iris hit the one that counted with two seconds remaining to give the Mustangs a 39-37 victory over Corwith-Wesley-Luverne on Thursday.

“She gave a fake to the middle and then hit a fadeaway 5-footer with the left hand that rattled around the rim,” said A-R coach Steve Waldstein.

The Mustangs improve to 9-9 overall with the victory.

“Defensively we played very well,” said Waldstein. “We killed them on the boards and had quite a few steals. We just couldn’t hit anything. We were 15-of-54 from the floor.

We were fortunate to get a win,” he added.

The Panthers put a box-and-one defense on A-R point guard Brianne Gonzales and held her two one 3-pointer.

However, Amy Leach came off the bench with a 10-point effort.

Amy’s been coming off the bench and been our spark plug. She's playing great defense and taking it strong to the basket,” said Waldstein.

Rosie Cheever had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

A-R played at West Bend-Mallard on Friday.
