Midgets fall to Orabs – Stangl scores 11 for ELC
SHELDON — The Estherville Lincoln Central boys basketball team had strong inside play early against Sheldon, but the Orabs heated up in their home gym for a 65-50 win over the Midgets.
ELC post players Marcus Stangl and Kyle Grems accounted for the Midgets’ first eight points but they trailed 12-8 early and 16-10 after one quarter of play.
“In the first half we had some nice offensive sets,” said ELC assistant coach Brian DeJong.
The Midgets maintained the four point lead until the Orabs hit a 3-pointer.
A putback by Collin Klingbeil a free throw from Dylan Sievert and a basket by Grems put ELC within four again at 23-19 when the Orabs went on an 8-0 run.
Sheldon led 36-23 at halftime.
ELC traded baskets with the Orabs most of the third quarter, but Sheldon led 55-37 to start the final frame.
ELC scored the first six points of the fourth quarter on baskets by Caleb Caboth, Matt Gruhlke and Stangl to cut the deficit to 55-43, but the Orabs hit another 3-pointer and ELC managed just seven points with Aaron Andrews draining a 3-pointer with 1:15 remaining for the final margin.
Stangl led ELC with 11 points while Caboth had 10 and Grems had nine.
Gruhlke and Scott Schmidt each had six points while Klingbeil had four, Andrews three and Sievert one.
Andy Dykstra led Sheldon with 21 points.
ELC (2-17, 0-14) hosts Storm Lake on Tuesday.
