Lakers falter vs. Spartans
CRESTON — While the Iowa Lakes men’s team is still in second place in Region XI, the Lakers aren’t as firmly attached to the spot after an 84-66 loss on Saturday.
Iowa Lakes coach Troy Larson puts the defeat firmly on his own shoulders.
“It all starts with the coaching staff,” he said. “We did a terrible job of having the guys prepared. I could see it in practice on Thursday and Friday. We had no life and no energy.”
The Lakers trailed 31-24 at halftime and never quite made a run in the second half.
The coach said none of the players were ready to go.
“When it’s across the board–100 percent, you have to look at the coaching first,” Larson said.
Although Iowa Lakes was 3-0 on the road in region games prior to Saturday’s loss, Southwestern was the first opponent the Lakers had beaten at home and then tried to win on the road.
While Kirkwood is alone at the top of the region and Clinton, who lost some players, is at the bottom, Larson said there is a lot of parity in spots two through seven.
“Southwestern has two likely Division I recruits and a couple of Division II players, so they’re a good team,” he said.
The Lakers were led by Jimmie Marshall with 15 points while Mike Betz had 12 and Cornelius Vines had 11.
Zach Fenceroy had a team-high seven rebounds as the Lakers out-rebounded their host 36-34.
However, Southwestern was 29-of-40 from the free throw line compared to 12-of-17 for the Lakers.
Iowa Lakes (18-6, 7-2) returns to action Wednesday at Mason City against North Iowa Area Community College.
