Eagles hold off Mustangs
FENTON — Having beaten North Sentral Kossuth once and nearly twice this season, Armstrong-Ringsted went in to Tuesday’s game with plenty of confidence against the No. 12 Eagles.
A-R came out firing and took an 11-4 midway through the first quarter, but NSK began a 20-5 run to take a 24-16 halftime lead.
While the Mustangs came all the way back , tying the game at 45-45 with 1:20 remaining, they were unable to get that final stop or key shot, falling 49-46 to the Eagles.
A-R’s Morgan Grabinoski and Brianne Gonzales both knocked down 3-pointers to build the 11-4 lead.
However, NSK’s Dayna Blome hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 11-7 to end the first quarter.
The Eagles then scored the first two baskets of the second quarter to tie the game at 11 and then scored five more to lead 16-11.
A-R’s Amy Leach and Michele Iris both ht baskets to keep the deficit to four, but NSK scored the final four points of the quarter to lead 24-16 at half.
A-R cut the deficit to four once in the third quarter, but trailed 34-29 to start the final period.
Rosie Cheever and Gonzales hit the first two shots to make it a one-point game at 34-33.
NSK twiced pushed the lead back up two six, but A-R kept battling back.
Two free throws each by Morgan Grabinoski and Iris cut the lead to 45-43 with two minutes remaining and then Cheever put back a missed shot to tie the game at 45-45.
A basket by Megan Rolling gave NSK a two-point edge again and Cheever hit a free throw to cut the lead to one.
A-R trailed by two points with 18 seconds remaining and a Gonzales 3-pointer went off the back of the rim.
A-R fouled and NSK made one free throw, but Grabinoski’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer missed as NSK held on.
Cheever led A-R with 13 points while Iris had 12 and Grabinoski had nine. Leach and Gonzales each had six points and Lisa Pelzer had two.
Seniors ending their high school careers for the Mustangs are Pelzer and Iris.
