Valiant effort comes

By Staff | Feb 14, 2008

ARMSTRONG — Although the Armstrong-Ringsted boys basketball team won just two games this season, fans wouldn’t know it from their effort on Wednesday.

The Mustangs still came up a few points short though in a 54-51 overtime loss to Twin River Valley in Class 1A postseason play.

“They guys came out and left everything on the court,” said A-R coach George Walker. “The energy and effort was there.”

Walker said the game was back and forth the entire night.

A-R led 16-11 after one quarter, but trailed 23-22 at halftime.

“Normally, we’ve had a poor third quarter, so I was a little worried,” Walker said.

However, the Mustangs came out and led 35-33 to start the final frame.

The Mustangs had a one-point lead and the ball with 48 seconds remaining.

“We went to our stall game and if they had a layup, they were to go for it, but we turned it over,” Walker said.

After trading turnovers again, TRV came up with a free throw to tie the game.

With time running down, the Mustangs put the ball in the hands of senior Brett Tigges, who scored 24 points on the night, but his last chance shot missed in regulation.

In the extra period, Walker said his team missed free throws while the Thunder made theirs.

Besides Tigges’ 24-point effort, fellow senior Logan Anderson had 12 points, six rebounds and three three steals.

A-R says farewell to six senior–Tigges, Anderson, Dillion McBride, Spencer Taylor, Elliot Kinnander and Andy Swalve.

“These are a great group of seniors and they never lost heart,” said Walker.
