DES MOINES — While both Graettinger/Terril wrestlers were striving for a higher spot on the podium, the two Knights finished the season amongst the state medal winners on Saturday.

At 189 pounds, Jake Hoffman wrestled for the fifth place medal against Matt Ferlitsch of Highland Riverside.

Hoffman, who had hurt a knee on Friday and a finger on Thursday, battled, but came up short in a 2-1 loss.

Hoffman ends this season with a 40-4 record and a sixth-place medal, a year after placing fourth. The junior will have opportunities to improve on that next season.

“I didn’t wrestle my best,” he said “I just have to work hard and hopefully do better next season.”

Teammate James Tatman wrestled Alex Rust of Central Lyon for seventh place and also came up a couple points short in a 4-1 loss.

Rust was leading 2-1 late in the match when he reversed Tatman.

“I was just glad to get on the podium,” said Tatman. “That was my main goal.”

The junior’s goal for next season is to return to state and place in the top four.

Tatman ends the season with a 35-5 record and an eighth-place medal

“Both had higher aspirations,” said G/T coach Cody Alesch. “It takes a lot of heart down here. Between the two wrestlers, they had 11 matches so you’re bound to get banged up some. These are all good kids you wrestle.”
