DES MOINES — Spirit Lake Parks combo of Derrick Miner and Dillon Miner both won on the final day of the 2008 Tournament.

While their matches weren’t for a championship, the two ended with third-place finishes. Teammate Alex Will finished with an eighth-place medal.

For Dillon, the senior finished in the top three for the third straight year after placing second in 2006 and first in 2007.

With his pin over Mike Kremer of Independence in 3:20, the 130-pound senior ends is final high school season with a 40-4 record. He also has over 150 career wins including more than 100 pins.

Derrick had a tougher time in his third-place match. After taking the lead against Justin Lopata of Benton Van Horne, the scored ended in a tie, 4-4, at the end of regulation.

However Derrick came up with the key move to win 6-4 in overtime in the 135-pound consolation match.

“I’m excited about placing third though I wish I’d been on the other side of the bracket,” Derrick said, who lost to eventual champ Andrew Long in the semifinals on Friday. “But I’m going up by two places every year.”

Derrick placed fifth a year ago.

The junior said he will remember this tournament though as it was the last for the two brothers together in high school.

At 215, pounds, Will faced another tough opponent in John Sawhill of JSPC Jefferson. Sawhill pinned Will in 1:54.

“Two years ago I never thought I’d be in this situation,” said Will, who wrestled mostly junior varsity or as a “180-pound heavyweight” as a sophomore.

Will ends his senior season with a 32-8 record.

“It was fun,” he said.
