Kirkwood too strong for Lakers

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Iowa Lakes women’s basketball team may just have to accept the fact that Kirkwood is a better team.

“They have four or five Division I athletes and they beat Iowa Central by 20-25 points both times,” said Iowa Lakes coach Brian Radtke. Iowa Central is currently second in the league standings with a 24-2 overall record and 13-2 in the league.

Although the Lakers started well on Saturday, the Eagles made a couple of runs before halftime to build a 44-26 lead.

The second half was all Kirkwood as they won 79-51.

“We played well the first 10 minutes and were ahead by a point,” said Iowa Lakes coach Brian Radtke. “Then we made a couple mistakes and they went on an 8-0 run. That they made another 8-0 run to end the half.”

The second half didn’t prove much better.

“They just took over and we didn’t score for the first few minutes,” said Radtke.

Only point guard Samantha Boje reached double digits in scoring as she hit five 3-pointers and ended with 17 points. Karissa Kramer and Ricca Soper each had three steals as the Lakers ended with 10 total. however, they had 25 turnovers.

Shanda Novak had seven points and 10 rebounds.

Iowa Lakes (18-8, 9-6) will hosts Iowa Central at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
