No. 10 Lakers open 2008 season in a dome
ROSEMOUNT, Minn. — The Iowa Lakes Community College softball team got an early jump on the 2008 season by traveling a couple of hours north to play in the Rosemount Irish dome versus Mayville State (ND).
A well-balanced offensive attack let the Lakers to a pair of opening day wins, 10-1 and 16-5, both in five innings.
Mayville State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game one, but Iowa Lakes plated three in the third highlighted by a 2-RBI single by freshman Michelle McKenna.
McKenna again supplied the offense in the fifth with a solo home run to make it 4-1 and her teammates joined in with six straight hits to put the game away with a total of seven runs in the fifth.
Sophomore Aly Bowers allowed only three hits, while striking out seven to pick up the win on the mound. McKenna was 3-4 (four RBIs), Stephanie Ochoa 3-4 (two RBIs), Camiel Salcedo 2-4 (one RBI), Andy Hacker 2-4 (one RBI) and Brittany Brohmer 2-3.
Game two was tight until an eight-run innning, this time in the third, blew the game open and Iowa Lakes ended up on top 16-5.
Ochoa and McKenna again paced the way offensively as Ochoa went 3-3 with six RBIs and McKenna was 3-4 with another two RBIs.
Kristina Manser was 3-4 with two RBIs as Iowa Lakes 3-4-5 hitters combined to go nine for 11 with 10 of the 15 RBIs.
Brohmer added a two-run home run in the eight-run third inning. Sarah Dockter pitched the first three innings and picked up the win and Lauren Smith struck out four as she pitched the fourth and fifth.
