For their final game in front of the home crowd, the Iowa Lakes sophomores stepped up the defense, especially in the second half, to put away Ellsworth 70-51 on Saturday.

Post player Shanda Novak stepped up with 19 points, seven rebounds and five steals, fellow post Kym Zitzner had 16 points and a blocked shot and Karissa Kramer finished with 13 points, four assists and four steals against the visiting Panthers.

Ellsworth kept pace with the Lakers in the first half.

“We kept getting up by about five (points) and then let them back in,” said Iowa Lakes coach Brian Radtke.

Right before the break though, the Lakers came up with a few steals to push their lead to 33-26.

Novak scored six of the team’s first 10 points in the second half, but it wasn’t until Kramer hit back-to-back 3-pointers that the Lakers led by double digits for good. That gave Iowa Lakes a 49-32 lead with about 10 minutes remaining in the game.

The Lakers maintained a 15-point lead for a few minutes and led by 20 when Zitzner hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 3:35 remaining.

“Our defense was much better in the second half,” said Radtke.

Iowa Lakes (19-9, 10-7) end the regular season against Des Moines Area Community College on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m. in Boone.
