In most of the games since the Christmas break, the Iowa Lakes men’s basketball team has come up with the defensive stops to win the close games.

That wasn’t the case on Saturday when Ellsworth came to town. The Panthers came out on top in the final regular season home game for the Lakers, 88-81.

“Going down the stretch the last five to seven minutes, we weren’t getting the stops and when we did get them, their big guy got the offensive rebounds,” said Iowa Lakes coach Troy Larson.

The game didn’t start that way.

While the two teams battled to a 10-10 tie, the Lakers pulled away with back-to-back 3-pointers by Zach Fenceroy and Mike Butz followed by layups from Jimmie Marshall and David Fox as part of a 10-1 run and a 20-11 lead.

With five minutes left, the Lakers led 30-17 after five straight points from Cornelius Vines.

But after taking a 37-25 lead with just under three-minutes remaining, Iowa lakes went cold as the Panthers hit three straight 3-pointers and ended the half on an 11-0 run to cut the lead to 37-36.

While the Lakers built an eight-point lead early in the second half, Ellsworth got hot again and also attacked the basket well.

The visitors had the difference at the free throw line where they were 33-of-42 while the Lakers were 22-of-31.

“We’ve been hurting all year with our consistency,” said Larson. “We gave up 66 points in the last 22 minutes.”

Iowa Lakes (20-8, 9-4) can still finish second in Region XI with a win over Des Moines Area Community College (22-5, 10-3) tonight. A loss will likely result in a fourth-place finish.
