MARSHALLTOWN — Among the teams in the bottom half of the Region XI Women’s Basketball Tournament, Iowa Lakes had the best chance to advance into this weekend’s semifinals.

As the No. 5 seed taking on No. 4 seed Marshalltown, the Lakers came up short of the task though, falling 61-55 to the Tigers on Tuesday.

“We came out really well and then they put a little pressure on us and we couldn’t do anything,” said Iowa Lakes coach Brian Radtke.

The Lakers led 22-10 after the first eight minutes of the game. The coach said the game could’ve been decided in the first 10 minutes, but the Lakers missed a lot of easy shots.

“We’d turn the ball over 3-4 times in a row,” Radtke said.

The Lakers still held a 28-22 lead at the break, but they continued to struggle in the second half.

With Marshalltown missing a couple players, Iowa Lakes did well on the boards with 50 rebounds. But that was offset by 28 turnovers.

“Of those 28, I’m guessing only eight to 10 of them were caused by Marshalltown,” Radtke said. “It didn’t matter who I had in the game or how many time outs I called.”

Shanda Novak ended the night with a double-double in her last game as a Laker with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Freshman Samantha Boje led the team with 11 points.

The Lakers end the season with a 19-11 record.

Besides Novak, other sophomores playing their final game as Laker were Karissa Kramer, Kristin Patterson, Sam Widmer and Kym Zitzner.

“They’ll be missed,” said Radtke.

There were no surprises in other Region XI first-round games. No. 1 seed Kirkwood trounced No. 8 Southeastern 106-29; No. 2 Iowa Central beat No. 7 NIACC 74-46 and No. 3 DMACC defeated Ellsworth 59-33.
