No. 10 Laker softball team off to a fast start

COLUMBIA, Kan. — The Iowa Lakes softball team got wins four, five and six for the season when they defeated Barton Community College by the score of 4-1, Colby Community College by a 2-1 margin and Cloud Community College 10-2 in five innnings. The No. 10 ranked Lakers are now 6-1 on the season and played Monday in Columbus, Neb. versus Central Community College.

Iowa Lakes took a 1-0 lead versus Barton in the bottom of the third with a one out triple by Kristina Manser and an RBI-single by Andrea Hacker. After Barton tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth, Iowa Lakes pushed three across in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by the go-ahead RBI by Brittany Brohmer.

Sophomore Aly Bowers allowed only three hits in her seven innings of work to go to 3-0 on the season. Manser was 2-3 and Brohmer 2-3 with one RBI for Iowa Lakes.

Game two was tight throughout as Colby Community College scored a first-inning run off of starting pitcher Lauren Smith, but Smith limited Colby to only one more hit for the next four inning before being relieved by Bowers.

Despite having chances, the Lakers remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh, when Aly Cloud punched a one-out single through the right side of the infield and Jamie Sorensen pushed a bunt between the pitcher and first baseman to put runners at first and second with one out. After a popup by Manser, freshman Hacker drove a 0-1 pitch over the left fielder’s head to score Cloud and Sorensen and give Iowa Lakes the come from behind 2-1 win.

Bowers pitched the final two innings to pick up the win and run her record to 4-0. Hacker was 2-4 with two RBIs and Michelle McKenna was 3-3 for Iowa Lakes.

The final game of the day was a 10-2 five-inning win versus Cloud Community College. Cloud jumped out to a 2-0 before Iowa Lakes scored three in the third highlighted by an RBI triple by Caiti Block.

The score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the fifth when Iowa Lakes erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth when the Lakers had seven straight batters reach base and score before they had an out. Hacker and Kimmie White had the only multi-hit games for Iowa Lakes. Sarah Dockter pitched all five innings to pick up her second win of the season.

Saturday’s games

Iowa Lakes went 1-1 on Saturday with an opening 8-7 win over Hutchinson CC and a 10-2 loss to Iowa Western in the nightcap.

Iowa Lakes jumped on top 5-0 against Hutchinson with first-inning RBIs by Andi Hacker, Michelle McKenna, Kimmie White, and Brittany Brohmer.

The Lakers added three more in the third with an RBI double by McKenna and and RBI single by White. Hutchinson battled back to an 8-7 game, but Aly Bowers (who pitched the first three innings) got the final eight outs to preserve the win. McKenna was 2-4 with three RBIs, White 2-4 with three RBIs, Hacker 2-4 and one RBI, Brohmer 2-3 and one RBI, Stephanie Ochoa 2-4 and Jamie Sorensen 2-3.

It was a different story versus Iowa Western as the Reivers took a 5-0 first inninng lead and cruised to the 10-2 five inning win. Kristina Manser was 2-3 and Caiti Block had the only two RBIs for the Lakers.
