Lakers bounce back from losses

CLERMONT, Fla. — After two losses on Saturday, the Iowa Lakes softball team got back on track Sunday with a pair of wins over Lake Sumpter (Fla.) Community College.

The score of game one was 5-1 and game two was 8-2. Iowa Lakes improves to 13-3 on the season and had Monday off before playing Tuesday against Rio Grande University.

Iowa Lakes dropped a pair of games on Saturday to Polk Community College (Winter Haven, Fla.) by scores of 6-0 and 10-4.

Against Lake Sumpter, Iowa Lakes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a walk to Andy Hacker and an RBI single by Stephanie Ochoa and a Lake Sumpter error that later scored Ochoa.

Lake Sumpter got a run back in the top of the sixth to make it 2-1, but the Lakers added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single by Brittany Brohmer and an RBI double by Camiel Salcedo.

Sophomore Aly Bowers pitched well in moving her record to 8-1 on the season, limiting Lake Sumpter to two hits while striking out 12. Ochoa was 2-3 with one RBI for Iowa Lakes.

Game two was played out in a similar fashion as Iowa Lakes took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Salcedo led the game off with a double and was later driven in by Ochoa. After a single by Kimmie White, Aly Cloud delivered a two-RBI double and Jamie Sorensen drove in Cloud to make it 4-0.

Iowa Lakes made it 6-0 in the second with a bases loaded two-out RBI single by White.

Lauren Smith worked the first five innings for Iowa Lakes to get the win with Bowers working the final two innings.

Camiel Salcedo was 4-5 with one RBI, White 4-4 with one RBI, Caiti Block 2-3 and Ochoa 2-4 with one RBI.

On Saturday, Polk broke up a scoreless game in the top of the fourth aided by two Laker errors.

A three-base error in the fifth led to another Polk run and Polk added three more in the seventh to make the final 6-0.

Iowa Lakes struggled to put any kind of offense together as Andy Hacker and Brittany Brohmer had the only hits. Aly Bowers suffered her first loss of the season.

Iowa Lakes battled back and forth in game two.

Polk Community College jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Iowa Lakes tied it in the third with an RBI single by Hacker and another by Kristina Manser.

Polk put two more on the board in the bottom of the third and another in the fifth before Iowa Lakes rallied to cut the lead to 5-4 with two in the sixth.

A pinch-hit bases-loaded single by Brittany Brohmer produced the offense for Iowa Lakes, but the Lakers left two runners on to end the inning.

Polk scored five runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Hacker was 2-4 with one RBI for Iowa Lakes.

Lauren Smith went the distance for Iowa Lakes to take the loss and drop her record to 2-1.
