Lakers split in home opener
The Iowa Lakes baseball team won its home opener on Wednesday with a 12-6 victory over Dakota County Technical College, but then came up short in the second game of the doubleheader, losing 6-5.
The Lakers first game was highlighted by a two-run home run by by Jose Ayala in the second inning. That was part of a five-run effort to put the Lakers on top 5-1.
Dakota County came back and tied the game by the top of the fourth, but the Lakers had another five-run inning in the fifth.
Catcher Brian Bravo was 3-4 with three doubles, two RBIs and a two runs while Abdiel Lebron was 2-4 with a triple and three RBIs.
Paul Choquette started the game and had three strikeouts. Isaias Rosario closed out the game and earned the win. He had one strikeout, but gave up no runs.
In game two, the Lakers struggled defensively in the third inning as Dakota County scored three runs to lead 3-1.
The Lakers were out-hit 8-6.
Ayala led the way, going 2-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Andru Kuilan was 2-4 with a solo home run and two RBIs.
Matt Leffler took the loss on the mound.
Iowa Lakes (9-7, 1-3) in Region XI is scheduled to host Kirkwood this in four games this weekend with the first at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The first game Sunday is set for noon. Also on the schedule, Anoka Ramsey will come to Estherville on Monday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
Earlier this week, the Lakers opened Region XI play and went 1-3 against Iowa Central in Fort Dodge.
On Monday, the Lakers lost 5-1 and 10-0. They picked up a 4-1 win on Tuesday, before falling 10-6 in the final game of the series.
