SL/O boys fall to Braves
CHEROKEE — The Spirit Lake/Okoboji boys tennis team got off to a rocky start with a 9-0 loss to Cherokee on Thursday.
“Cherokee is definitely in the conversation as one of, if not the top team in the conference, so it was a tough matchup for our first meet of the season,” said SL/O coach Dan Taylor. “They have a roster, both varsity and JV, full of guys who have played at least a year, and some of them are four-year players, while 13 of our 19 players just picked up a racket for the first time two weeks ago, have only had a handful of practices outdoors, and were playing their first match ever– including two of our varsity players. So inexperience was most certainly a factor when it came to the final team result.”
In singles play, Scott Maudlin lost 10-7 to Cole Egger; Mason Bergquist lost 10-3 to Kyle Ruehle; Sam Sieh lost 10-2 to Cole Renken; Brady Harmelink lost 10-2 to Dan Feser; Blake Kleigl lost 10-4 to Tom Wilson and Mitch O’Neill lost 10-2 to Nick Parker.
In doubles play, Maudlin and Bergquist lost 10-5 to Egger and Ruehle; Sieh and Kleigl lost 10-2 to Renken and Parker; and Harmelink and O’Neill lost 10-7 to Feser and Wilson.
Spirit Lake/Okoboji hosted Fairmont, Minn. on Friday.
