SL/O girls sweep Cherokee
OKOBOJI — Although the Spirit Lake/Okoboji girls tennis team graduated their top two tennis players from a year ago, it still didn’t lose a beat opening the 2008 season with a 9-0 victory over Cherokee.
“Our team showed great hustle tonight,” said SL-O coach Bob O’Hara. “Our top three girls are great athletes, so it’s difficult for our opponents to hit winners. On the down side we would hit the ball and stand around too much.
“We need to work on getting in position after we hit our shot. This is just something that comes with experience,” he said. “We need to clean it up a little bit by Saturday.”
Taking the No. 1 slot this season, Alli Gerking won 10-2 over Shannon Schroeder. At the No. 2 singles, Aubry Kolegraff won 10-5 over Allie Parker. In other singles, Kassie Hein won 10-5 over Demi Dunn; Cassidy Clarity won 10-0 over Michelle McGarry, Kara Crosgrove won 10–0 over Sofia Seliger and Shirley Coenen won 10-2 over Marissa Leissler.
In doubles, Gerking and Kolegraff defeated Schroeder and Dunn 10-5; Crosgrove and Hein won 10-4 over Parker and Cedar and, Clarity and Kylie Stole won 10-2 over McGarry and Leissler.
The Indians return to action Saturday as they host LeMars and Denison-Schleswig at 9 a.m.
