ELC opens season with win over Braves
CHEROKEE — With an entirely new varsity lineup from a year ago, the 2008 Estherville Lincoln Central girls tennis team opened the season with a solid 7-2 victory over Cherokee on Monday.
First-year head coach Larry Kirchner said he was happy with the team’s performance.
“I thought they played well for their first match out,” he said. “I’m real impressed with a young team that didn’t have a single returning player.”
ELC took won five singles matches with Steph Wittmer winning 10-4 at the No. 1 singles over Shannon Schroeder.
At the No. 3 singles, Sarah Chrestiansen won two of the last three games to pull out a 10-8 victory over Demi Duhn. Kaylene Vos also had a close match as she pulled out a 10-7 win over Michelle McGarry. At the No. 5 singles, Emily Swalve won 10-3 over Sophia Seliger and Morgan Kirchner won 10-4 over Marissa Leisser at the No. 6 singles.
In the other singles match, No. 2 Lexie Hash lost 10-4 to Allie Parker.
In doubles, Wittmer and Vos lost 10-7, but Hash and Chrestiansen won easily 10-1 and the No. 3 doubles of Swalve and Kirchner won 10-5.
In junior varsity play, ELC won 8-1.
In singles, Erin Olsen won 8-1, Courtney Bruns won 8-3, Michelle Wedebrand won 8-1, Trisha Nelson won 8-3, Erin Kirchner lost 8-4 and Holly Enerson won 8-0.
In doubles, Olsen and Bruns won 8-2; Wedebrand and Nelson won 8-3 and Kirchner and Enerson won 8-0.
In exhibition play, Molly Martens and Kelsey McCuley won 6-2.
ELC travels to LeMars on Thursday.
