SL/O boys pick up first victory of season
OKOBOJI — The Spirit Lake/Okoboji boys tennis team bounced back from its season-opening loss on thursday to a 5-4 victory over Fairmont, Minn. on Friday.
SL/O edged the Cardinals by sweeping the doubles play including winning a tiebreak at the No. 2 doubles.
According to coach Dan Taylor, Sam Sieh and Blake Kleigl fought off two match points when they were down 6-7.
“They stayed tough, both mentally and physically and mentally,” Taylor said.
Overall, the coach had only praise for his team.
“Our seniors and top singles players, (Scott) Maudlin and (Mason) Bergquist, both played very well, and gave the team three of our five match victories,” he said. “Brady Harmelink fought very hard in singles–he played a terrific match, left everything on the court, and nearly pulled it out. And both Blake Kleigl and Mitch O’Neill, who each played just their second competitive tennis match ever, made a lot of improvements in just one day compared to the day before against Cherokee.”
In singles, Maudlin won 10-5 over Reid Rosen; Bergquist won 10-5 over Paul Miller; Seih lost 10-4 to Tony Hoong; Harmelink lost 10-8 to Garritt Cochran; Kleigl lost 10-4 to Dylan VonBank and O’Neill lost 10-5 to Spencer Siebert.
