SL/O girls tennis keeps on rolling
SPIRIT LAKE — The Spirit Lake/Okoboji girls tennis team didn’t drop a match in sweeping LeMars and Denison on Saturday–but one match was real close.
Against LeMars, No. 3 singles player Kara Crosgrove trailed 8-2 and a sudden momentum swing went in her favor. She won eight straight games to defeat cailin Bauerly and win 10-8.
“I can’t say enough good things about how hard Kara worked and hustled to win that match,” said SL/O coach Bob O’Hara. “I just think that she physically and mentally wore her opponent out..
The coach also higlighted the play of the team’s top singles player, Alli Gerking.
“She’s hitting the ball very well and is really focused on the court. I was pleased with the way the whole team played Denison,” he said. “We really looked composed out on the court. I see great things ahead for this team.“
In singles play against LeMars, Gerking beat Samantha Rich 10-5; Cassity Clarity won 10-1 over Amelia Stonesifer, Crosgrove beat Bauerly 10-8; Shirley Coenen won 10-5 over Natalie Miller; Kathleen Rowley shut out Rachel Ludwig 10-0 and Kylie Stoll won 10-4 over Liz Orris.
In doubles, Gerking and Clarity won 10-5 over Rich and Miller; Crosgrove and Stoll won 10-5 over Stonesifer and Bauerly and Coenen and Rowley won 10-1 over Ludwig and Orris.
Against Denison, Gerking won 10-2 over Holly Brus; Aubry Kolegraff won 10-5 over Kristi Esser; Kassie Hein won 10-6 over Mackenzie Brus; Clarity won 10-6 over Jacy Jahn; Crosgrove won 10-2 over Claudia Martinez and Coenen won 10-4 over Sydney Weber.
In doubles, Gerking and Kolegraff won 10-4 over holly Brus and Mackenzie Brus; Crosgrove and Clarity won 10-5 over Weber and Jahn and Hein and Stoll beat Martinez and Kylie Schmidt 10-4.
“I was pleased with the way the whole team played Denison,” said O’Hara. “We really looked composed out on the court. I see great things ahead for this team. I’ve had as much fun coaching them as any other team that I’ve coached.”
Spirit Lake/Okoboji hosted Spencer on Monday. The team travels to Storm Lake on Thursday.
