OKOBOJI — The Spirit Lake/Okoboji girls tennis team passed its toughest test of the young 2008 season with a 5-2 victory over Spencer on Monday.

The final two doubles matches were suspended due to darkness, but the outcome of the dual was already decided.

SL/O coach Bob O’Hara pointed to Kassie Hein’s 10-8 win over Beth Druvenga at the No. 3 singles as the turning point in the match as SL/O’s top two players both lost.

“Kassie has been playing great this year as has Cassidy Clarity who completely dominated No. 4 singles against a very tough Jen Barnett,” O’Hara said.

At the No. 1 singles, Alli Gerking lost 10-5 to Hannah Maertens and Aubry Kolegraff lost by the same score to Emily Wassom.

SL/O won the final four singles matches starting with Hein’s victory and Clarity winning 10-2 over Barnett. At the No. 5 singles, Kara Crosgrove won in a tiebreaker, 11-10 (7-4) and No. 6 singles Shirley Coenen won 10-6 over Holly McCloud.

With a 4-2 lead heading into doubles, Gerking and Kolegraff defeated Wassom and Druvenga 10-7.

“I can’t say enough good things about the way these girls hustle and compete,” O’Hara said. “Our two freshmen really played a great doubles match against Spencer’s top doubles team. They’re going to be very successful, but they still have a lot of room for improvement. But you can’t teach quickness and hand speed, and they’ve got as much of that as I’ve ever seen.”

SL/O travels to Storm Lake on Thursday.
