Midgets fall to SL/O in Lakes play
The Spirit Lake/Okoboji boys tennis team earned its second victory of the season at the expense of Estherville Lincoln Central on Monday.
SL/O coach Dan Taylor said the fact that his team was playing its fourth meet while ELC was only playing for the second time contributed to the visitors victory.
“This was a very solid performance for the varsity players,” said Taylor. “Several of the matches were won handily, and we also won a couple of close matches.”
The closest match of the day came at the No. 4 singles where Brady Harmelink edged Phil Leffel 11-10 (7-4).
ELC’s Jim Mohler also came up a couple games short in a 10-7 loss to Mason Bergquist at the No. 2 singles.
In other singles play, Tyler Halstead lost 10-1 to Scott Maudlin; Joe Woodward fell to Sam Sieh 10-3, Adam Mustard lost 10-0 to Blake Kleigl and Seth Origer lost 10-2 to Mitch O’Neill.
In the No. 2 doubles, Mohler and Leffel came up short again Sieh and Kleigl losing 10-7 to the SL/O pair.
In other doubles, halstead and Woodward lost 10-5 to Maudlin and Bergquist while Mustard and Origer lost 10-4 to Harmelink and O’Neill.
SL/O slipped past ELC 5-4 in the junior varsity match.
Picking up singles wins for ELC were Matt Hansen, 8-5, and Kevin Kuemper 8-2 at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots.
In other singles play, Tom Markeson lost 8-2, Cody jackson lost 8-1, Roger Breaman lost 8-1 and Nate Jensen lost 8-2.
In doubles, Markeson and Jackson earned an 8-3 victory at the No. 1 slot. In other doubles, Breaman and Hansen lost 8-6 and Jensen and Kuemper lost 8-4.
ELC continues action Tuesday at Spencer. Spirit Lake/Okoboji hosts LeMars.
