Bad day for golf, good for Lakers

SPENCER — After the first day of competition at the Buena Vista Spring Invitational, the Iowa Lakes men’s golf team was in fourth place in the 17-team tournament.

Lakers Andy Soper and Nick Christensen both opened the two-day tournament with rounds of 77, tying them for 12th overall individually.

Max Koster came in with an 80 while the Lakers had a choice of 82s from Tom Thompson and Ross Froehlich.

“It was brutal out there, but the guys battled through it well,” said Iowa Lakes coach Dan Soper. “We still weren’t satisfied with our play, but we’re happy with where we’re at.”

The Lakers were the lone two-year school amongst four-year colleges and universities.

Central College led the field by eight strokes with a 292 as four of their five golfers shot 73 and were in a five-way tie for first place, playing at the Spencer Golf and Country Club.

Nebraska Wesleyan was second with a 300 followed by Central College’s White Team with a 312 and the Lakers with 316.

Simpson College was close behind with a 318 followed by Morningside College with 319,, Coe College with 322, Wartburg College with 323, Northwestern College with 324, Loras College and Dordt College each with 326, Buena Vista University with 328, Briar Cliff University with 329, Central College’s Grey Team with 335, Luther College with 339, Cornell College with 361 and Buena Vista’s Gold Team with 395.

The tournament continues today at Lake Creek Golf Course in Storm Lake.
