SPIRIT LAKE — The Spirit Lake/Okoboji boys tennis team came up on the short end of three close singles matches in a 7-2 loss to LeMars on Thursday.

“I thought both our team and LeMars played well today,” said SLO coach Dan Taylor. “There were three very tight singles matches, and LeMars happened to win them all by just two games.”

Those matches came out the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 singles where Scott Maudlin lost 11-9 to Kyle Koth, Sam Sieh lost 10-8 to Eric Janssen and Mitch O’Neill lost 11-9 to Zach Lancaster.

“Maudlin, Sieh and O’Neill all played really well, and were close to pulling their matches out, but the LeMars guys all played well at the very end,” said Taylor.

The Indians only wins were Mason Bergquist’s 10-5 singles victory over Anthony Schimek and Maudlin and Bergquist downing Schimek and Tyler Petty 10-5 at the No. 2 doubles.

“Mason played very well today, winning both his singles and doubles matches,” said Taylor.

In other singles play, Brady Harmelink lost 10-5 to Petty and Blake Kleigl lost 10-4 to Nick Gerth.

In other doubles matches, Sieh and Kleigl lost 10-3 to Koth and Janssen and Harmelink and O’Neill lost 10-3 to Lancaster and Brett Geise.
