Iowa Lakes softball completes busy weekend with sweep over Kirkwood
One day after dropping two straight games for only the second time all season, the Iowa Lakes softball team got back in the win column with a home sweep of Kirkwood by scores of 5-3 and 5-0 on Sunday.
Iowa Lakes used a two-out double by Kimmie White and an RBI single by Kristina Manser to jump on top 1-0 in the third inning.
Another two-out single by Stephanie Ochoa scored Camiel Salcedo to make it 2-0 in the fourth. After a Kirkwood run in the top of the sixth, the Lakers responded with three in the bottom of the inning with a two-RBI double by Ochoa and a groundout by Manser. Kirkwood got the tying run to plate in the seventh, but Aly Bowers got her sixth strikeout to end the game at 5-3.
Bowers got the win to move to 25-5 on the season.
Ochoa was 3-4 with three RBIs, Salcedo 2-3, White 2-4, Brittany Brohmer 2-4 and Jamie Sorensen 2-3.
In game two, freshman pitcher Lauren Smith would scatter six hits over 6 1/3 innings with Bowers getting the final two outs and Iowa Lakes shut out Kirkwood 5-0.
Smith was helped by a solid defense including a triple play in the second inning when shortstop Manser caught a soft line drive tossed the ball to Caiti Block at second to catch the runner off and then the relay to first for the third out.
Salcedo was 2-4 with one RBI, Ochoa 2-3, Brohmer 2-4 and Sorensen 2-3 with 2 RBIs.
Iowa Lakes improves to 43-9 on the season and 17-5 in Region XI play. Iowa Lakes will next play today versus Iowa Central with the doubleheader scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
On Saturday, Iowa Lakes ran into the No. 2 nationally ranked Muscatine team and dropped two region games by scores of 6-3 and 18-5.
Sophomore Brittany Brohmer hit her eighth home run of the season with two outs in the second inning to give Iowa Lakes a 1-0 lead.
It stayed that way until Muscatine rallied to score six runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Iowa Lakes rallied with two runs in the seventh and had the tying run at the plate, but fell short in the comeback and lost 6-3.
Aly Bowers took the loss to drop her season record to 24-5. Brohmer was 2-3 with two RBIs.
Muscatine jumped out early and often in game two scoring six runs in the first and adding runs in every inning except for the fourth. Iowa Lakes made it 6-2 with RBIs by Michelle McKenna and Aly Cloud, but could not get holds from the hot hitting Cardinals.
Lauren Smith took the loss working the first two innings and the fourth and fifth.
Brohmer again led Iowa Lakes at the plate going 2-3 with one RBI, including her second home run of the day.
Kristina Manser also added a solo home run in the fourth, but it was not nearly enough as Iowa Lakes dropped the 18-5 decision.
