Midgettes notch second victory
STORM LAKE — The Estherville Lincoln Central girls tennis team picked up its second win of the season with a 5-4 win over Storm Lake on Monday.
The top of ELC’s lineup struggled, but the bottom of the lineup had success.
“Their No. 1 and No. 2 were very strong and didn’t make many mistakes,” said ELC coach Larry Kirchner. “The bottom of the lineup came through for us tonight.”
The Midgettes took the bottom three singles as Kaylene Vos won 10-6 over Amanda Helmbrecht;, Emily Swalve won 10-3 over Amanda Kavan and Erin Olson won 10-3 over Audrey Wells.
In other singles, Stephanie Wittmer lost 10-2 to Abby Smith; Lexie Hash lost 10-0 to Kelly Smith and Morgan Rosch lost 10-2 to Sarah Chrestiansen.
ELC took two of the three doubles. Wittmer and Chrestiansen lost 10-1 to the Smiths, but Hash and Vos broke a 6-6 tie and won four of the last five games for a 10-7 victory over Roush and Hembrecht at the No. 2 doubles. Swalve and Olson closed out the match with a 10-3 victory over Kavan and Wells.
ELC’s junior varsity only dropped one match on the way to an 8-1 victory.
At the No. 1 singles, Morgan Kirchner won 8-5 with Michele Wedebrand losing by the same score at the No. 2 singles.
At the No. 3 slot, Courtney Bruns battled back from a 4-0 deficit to win 8-5. Rounding out the singles scores, Trish Nelson won 8-0, Erin Kirchner won 8-2 and Molly Martens won 8-2.
ELC swept the doubles with Morgan Kirchner and Wedebrand winning 8-6. Kelsey McCauley played her first JV match with Nelson as they won 8-2. Erin Kirchner and Martens wrapped up the win with an 8-1 victory.
In exhibition play, Heather Enerson and Holly Enerson won 6-2; Laura Fandel and Allison Hevern won 6-1; Liz Olson and Tessa Bernholtz won 6-1 and Megan Rogers and Holly Enerson won 7-5.
ELC hosts Cherokee today.
