SLPO soccer keeps improving
The Spirit Lake Park/Okoboji girls soccer team put together a solid effort, but fell to Unity Christian on Thursday, 6-1.
Coach Yvonne Taylor said the team played a good game though.
“The girls worked very hard to play their own game, to contain and capitalize,” she said.
SLPO actually held an early lead when Shelby Rohlf scored on a penalty kick.
Unity Christian scored five minutes later to tie the game.
On a wet field, an SLPO player slid in front of her own goal and scored Unity’s second goal
“That kind of let the wind out of our sails for the remainder of that first half,” said Taylor. “Unity really put the pressure on us. The score went 5-1 at the half.”
Taylor said the team regrouped in the second half, only allowing one goal and playing most of the time on the attack.
“(Freshman) Bethany Wilson played the whole game in goal with 17 saves,” said Taylor. “She was awesome.”
Rohlf, also a freshman, had three shots on goal to go with her penalty kick.
Senior Lauren Chapman had five shots on goal.
Freshman Dana Potter and senior Hannah Hussong each had one shot on goal.
“We are learning how to create opportunities for ourselves and how to get behind the defense,” Taylor said. “We just need to get the feel for putting the ball on goal. It is definitely coming along.”
