Lakers end season with more records
DES MOINES — The 2008 Iowa Lakes softball team continued setting records while finishing up its weekend with a 4-1 record.
On Saturday, Laker coach Mike Bosch earned his 399th and 400th career wins with a 10-2 win over Southwestern and 13-2 victory over Marshalltown, but the Simpson JV won 13-0.
Also Saturday, freshman Stephanie Ochoa recorded her 93rd hit of the season to break the single season record of 92 set by Kimmie White a year ago. The team also reached 499 runs to break the single season record set in 2006.
On Sunday, the Lakers finished up the regular season with wins over Central Community College, 13-1, and Marshalltown, 11-5.
Iowa Lakes finishes the regular season with a 50-11 record and a 22-6 region record. The Lakers wait until Friday to begin the Region XI tournament in Fort Dodge.
Iowa Lakes jumped out on top versus Central with a first-inning home run by Stephanie Ochoa.
The Lakers added three more in the second which included a two-run home run by Emily Reimers and an RBI single by Camiel Salcedo.
Four more runs in the third made it 8-0 highlighted by a three-run home run by Jamie Sorensen and five more in the fourth made it 13-0 before Central scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth.
Freshman Lauren Smith worked all five innings and completed the regular season with an 18-3 record. Reimers was 3-3 with five RBIs, Sorensen 2-2 with three RBIs, Brittany Brohmer 2-2, Caiti Block 2-2 and Salcedo 2-4 with one RBI.
In the final game of the day versus Marshalltown, Iowa Lakes fell behind 4-0 in the first inning, but responded with five runs in the top of the second to take a 5-4 lead.
After Marshalltown tied the game at five, Iowa Lakes scored a run in the fourth with an RBI single by Kimmie White and five more in the sixth to pull away with the 11-5 win.
Brohmer had a three-run home run in the sixth and with that home run tied the single season home run record of 16 set by Erin Jones and Sonjia Schuurmans.
Aly Bowers worked all seven innings, only allowing one hit after the second inning to get her 28th win on the season.
Bowers also struck out eight to reach the 200 strikeout plateau on the season. Salcedo was 3-5, White 2-4 with two RBIs, and Brohmer 2-3 with four RBIs.
Iowa Lakes fell behind Southwestern 2-0, but responded with three runs in the bottom of the second with a three-run home run by Brittany Brohmer.
Iowa Lakes added two more in the fourth with RBI singles by Sarah Dockter and Kimmie White to make it 5-3 and then a five-run sixth inning ended the game by the eight-run rule.
That sixth inning was highlighted by Brohmer’s second three-run home run of the game.

Iowa Lakes scored seven runs in the third inning versus Marshalltown and cruised to a 13-2 win.
Brohmer hit her third home run on the day to make it 3-0 and that was followed by RBIs by Sorensen, Camiel Salcedo and two by Ochoa. Brohmer led off the fourth inning with her fourth home run of the day and Sorensen finished off the scoring in the fifth with a two-run home run.
Aly Bowers tossed a three-hitter in winning her 27th game of the season.
Brohmer was 2-3 with three RBIs, Sorensen 2-4 with three RBIs, Salcedo 4-5 with three RBIs, Hacker 2-5 with one RBI, Ochoa 3-4 with two RBIs, and Kristina Manser 2-3.
Iowa Lakes did not have the same results in game three as Bowers gave up three runs in the first versus the Simpson JV and Iowa Lakes could not climb out of the hole from there on.
Five Laker errors combined with the Simpson offense resulted in a 13-0 loss. Ochoa had two the four Laker hits.
