Maudlin, Bergquist earn all-conference
STORM LAKE — Scott Maudlin and Mason Bergquist won the No. 1 doubles bracket to earn first team all-conference honors on Saturday.
The pair had wins against LeMars, Storm Lake, Spencer and Estherville Lincoln Central on the way to a 4-1 record in round-robin play.
“Going into the tournament, we knew Scott & Mason would be included in the favorites to win the doubles tournament, and they performed well throughout the day,” said SL/O coach Scott Taylor. “In the third of their five matches, they slipped a little and fell to Cherokee. But they were able to re-group and win the last two matches to clinch the conference title.”
Spencer gave Maudlin and Bergquist a little challenge in their final match of the day.
“They fought off four match points in the tiebreak but Scott and Mason pulled it out 9-7,” said Taylor.
Mitch O’Neill and Brady Harmelink played singles for SL/O. O’Neill went 1-4 with the lone win against ELC while Harmelink was 0-5.
“Our singles guys really got thrown into the fire,” said Taylor. “Brady and Mitch have played No. 4 and No. 6 for us all season, and they were playing mostly No. 1 and No. 2 players. But they are young, and it was a good learning experience for them.”
Sam Sieh and Blake Kleigl played the No. 2 doubles bracket and finished with a 23- record with wins against ELC and Cherokee.
“I was hoping the No. 2 doubles team would be able to pull out an overall victory in their group, but Sam and Blake got off to a little bit of a slow start, so they had the pressure of playing catch-up all day,” said Taylor. “But they are a solid team, and I know they will rebound and get on a roll again in their matches leading up to districts.”
Spencer edged Storm Lake in the team standings to win the tournament title.
The Tigers had 16 points with Storm Lake second with 15 points. LeMars and Cherokee tied for third with nine points while SL/O had seven points and ELC had four points.
