SL/O wins Lakes Tournament
SPENCER — While Spencer gave Spirit Lake/Okoboji a reason to worry at the Lakes Conference Girls Tennis Tournament, SL/O regrouped to edge the Tigers 17-16 in the team scoring.
“I was really nervous after the second round when we played Spencer,” said SL/O coach Bob O’hara. “We lost three out of four matches to them so they were in the driver’s seat. But our girls never got discouraged.”
The coach pointed to Alli Gerking as an example.
“She could have easily felt sorry for herself after a heartbreaking loss to Hannah Maertens, but she went on to play great tennis the rest of the day and ended up winning the No. 1 singles flight,” O’Hara said.
Gerking along with No. 1 doubles team Aubry KoleGraff and Kassie Hein and No. 2 singles player Cassidy Clarity, all earned first team all-conference honors.
Gerking was 4-1 on the day as were KoleGraff and Clarity while Clarity went 5-0.
“Although our No. 2 doubles team (Kara Crosgrove and Kylie Stoll) ended up second they played great after their Spencer match and actually ended up winning more games than Spencer,” said O’Hara. “They also won the last match of the day sealing the team championship.”
Crosgrove and Clarity were also posted a 4-1 record.
The coach was happy to see his top four players make all-conference.
“Kassie Hein has had a great season and this was well deserved,” he said. “Having our two freshmen (Gerking and Kolegraff) make all conference was also great. They came into the season with quite a bit of pressure on them. But have responded well.
“Finally Cassidy Clarity really gutted it out today. She twisted her ankle in the third match but stuck it out winning five out of five matches,” he said.
