Soper earns trip to Florida
OKOBOJI — Iowa Lakes Ricca Soper earned a trip to the national Division II junior college golf tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla., following her play at the Region XI Women’s Golf Tournament this past weekend.
The former Estherville Lincoln Central led the field after the first day of competition on Friday as she carded a 77 in cold weather. Her second day score of 91 on Saturday wasn’t ideal, but she still placed third overall.
Due to the cold weather, coaches chose to start play late (at 10:30 a.m.) with a shotgun start at Brooks National Golf Club in Okoboji.
DMACC won the team tourney with members Sam Pingel, Savanah Krull, Sharnae Winters, Brittni Katro and Marie Jeanblanc. They will advance to the national tournament. Also advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament May 12- 15 were Morgan Brown, Iowa Central; Brittany O’Brien, NIACC; Andrea Richter, Iowa Western; Candace Harless, Iowa Western; and Kayli Jones, NIACC.
“I want to thank the players. I think the biggest accomplishment was getting 36 holes in and all the young women showed a tremendous amount of grit and character to complete their rounds” said Dan Soper, head golf coach at Iowa Lakes. “We’re certain that the weather will be a little nicer down in Florida!”
DMACC carded a two-day total 680 as they had three golfers in the top five led by Sam Pingel with a 161.
Iowa Western placed second with 721 followed by Iowa Lakes with 732. NIACC was fourth with a 747 and Ellsworth was fifth with a 754.
For Iowa Lakes, Sarah Subbert tied for 14th overall as she shot a 92 on day one and a 94 on day two for a 186. April Wolf shot rounds of 95 and 93 for a 188 and tied for 19th overall. Roxy Headley placed 23rd after rounds of 92 and 102 for a 194.
Twenty-eight golfers finished the competition.
