Mustangs win Cornbelt
ARMSTRONG — The Armstrong-Ringsted girls track team may not be big on numbers, but the Mustangs definitely showed heart in winning the Cornbelt Conference meet on Tuesday.
“The girls ran with a lot of heart tonight,” said A-R coach Robert Zotz. “Only having 14 girl run meant some had to run a lof of races with little down time. But they did it and earned a great accomplishment.”
A-R finished with 141 points with thre other schools battling for second place. Ventura cmae out on top of that race, scoring 103 points followed by North Sentral Kossuth with 101 and West Bend-Mallard/Twin River Valley with 98. Rounding out the team scoring, Clay Central-Everly finished in fifth with 64 points followed by Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka with 42, Corwith-Wesley-Luverne with 22, Graettinger/Terril with nine and Ruthven-Ayrshire with six.
The Mustangs finished with seven first place finishes.
Senior Lisa Pelzer won three events herself and had a hand in another.
She won the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 3 3/4 inches; the 400-meter hurdles by clocking in at 1:11.68 and the 100-meter hurdles in 16.56 seconds.
She ran the lead leg of the winning 4×400-meter erlay which also consisted of Brittney Mitchell, Rosie Cheever and Morgan Grabinoski. The quartet ran a time of 4:31.77.
Cheever gave the Mustangs a first-place finish in the discus with a throw of 103 feet, 6 inches and placed second in the shot put with a throw of 34 feet, 1 inch. She also finished second in the 100-meter dash in 13.43 seconds.
A-R went 1-2 in teh 400-meter dash with Olivia Craig finishing in 1:03.44 with Grabinoski right behind in 1:04.36.
A-R’s final first place finish came from teh sprint medley team of Haley Fox, Crystal Bush, krista Pelzer and Grabinoski with their time of 2:03.39.
Grabinoski finished second in the 200-meter dash in 27.47 seconds while Kirsta Pelzer finished fourth in 27.93 seconds.
Also, Traci Speltz finished second in the 3000-meter run in 12:36.71. She finished fourth in the 1500-meter run in 6:;0.88 with Craig in fifth in 6:03.27.
Craig added a third-place finish in the 800-meter run in 2:45.78 and was fourth int eh high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 2 inches.
The 4×200-meter relay team of Heather Rein, Bush, Fox and Krista Pelzer was fourth in 2:03.21.
The 4×800-meter relay team of Tess Christiansen, Leah Sanders, Taylor Grabinoski and Karen Payne-Beaver was fifth in 13:37.42. Also fifth was the distance medley team of Rein, Bush, Mitchell and Speltz in 5:14.43.
Placing sixth was the shuttle hurdle team of Rein, Taylor Gabinoski, Bush and Sanders in 1:22.88. Also sixth was the 4×100-meter relay team of Fox, Bush, Mitchell and Krista Pelzer in 1:02.16.
