Spirit Lake/Okoboji falls to Tornadoes
STORM LAKE — The Spirit Lake/Okoboji boys tennis team took on an experience Storm Lake team.
The Tornadoes featured five seniors and a junior and came away with a 7-2 win over SL/O.
In singles play, Scott Maudlin earned the lone victory, a 10-6 victory over Jesse Munger at the No. 1 singles.
Maudlin and Mason Bergquist teamed up to win the doubles over Munger and Erick Stephas with an 10-8 win at the No. 1 doubles.
“Scott played brilliantly in both singles and doubles. His opponent, Munger, won second place in the conference tournament just a couple of days ago, but Scott really took it to him, played a smart match, executed well, and got a very solid victory,” said SL/O coach Dan Taylor. “Maudlin and Bergquist played an excellent doubles match as well. They had several streaks of great doubles tennis, controlling the net, and hitting good passing shots and lobs. There were two patches where they got ahead, but then got a little defensive and let their opponents back into the match. But they stayed aggressive at the end, and pulled out a very good victory.”
In other singles matches, Bergquist lost 10-4 to Stephas; Sam Sieh lost 10-2 to Taylor Anderson; Mitch O’Neill lost 10-5 to Jeremy Boese; Blake Kleigl lost 10-6 to Will Hansen and Brady Harmelink lost 10-0 to Cory Nelson.
In doubles, Sieh and Kleigl lost 11-9 to Anderson and Boese and O’Neill and Harmelink lost 10-0 to Nelsen and Hansen.
