Lakers blast NIACC in first round of tourney

FORT DODGE –The Iowa Lakes softball team had a short first day at the Region XI tournament, defeating NIACC 10-0 in five innings before the weather postponed the remainder of the games on Friday.

Play will resume on Saturday with Iowa Lakes (51-11) taking on Iowa Central (51-8) at 3 p.m. The two teams split during the regular season with Iowa Lakes winning 3-0 and 5-0 and Iowa Central winning 2-1 and 8-5.

The none game versus NIACC lasted only 50 minutes as freshman Lauren Smith pitched a two-hit shutout and Iowa Lakes blasted out four home runs in the 10-0 route.

Emily Reimers got things started in the third with a lead off home run before Kimmie

White had a two-out three-run home run to make the score 4-0.

Brittany Brohmer led the fourth off with her 17th home run of the season, breaking the single season home run record set by Erin Jones and Sonjia Schuurmans.

Jamie Sorensen added a pinch-hit single to drive in two more to make the tally 7-0.

Finally in the fifth a lead off double by White, a single by Kristina Manser and a walk off home run by Brohmer ended the game at 10-0.

Brohmer was 2-3 with four RBIs, White 3-3 with three RBIs and Camield Salcedo 2-3.
