Spencer hands SL/O a loss in Lakes Conference rematch
OKOBOJI — In the first meeting this season, Spirit Lake/Okoboji won three matches against Lakes Conference champion Spencer.
When the two teams met for the rematch on Saturday, a shorthanded SL/O team struggled to come up with a win in a 9-0 sweep by the Tigers.
“It turned out to be quite a different meet from the first meet we had against Spencer,” said SL/O coach Dan Taylor. “The first time we played we were able to pull out three match wins. Today, however, we were missing one singles player, and both we and Spencer have had lineup changes since the last meet, so most of the guys played somebody new. Those new matchups, along with Spencer’s high quality of play posed a big challenge for us.
In singles play, Scott Maudlin lost 10-6 to Chris Lensing; Mason Bergquist lost 10-8 to Sascha Schulz; Sam Sieh lost 10-5 to Joey Toale; Mitch O’Neill lost to Chris Jones 10-1; Brady Harmelink lost 10-5 to Taylor Harman and Jordan Birkland lost 10-1 to Jon Gabhart.
In doubles, Maudlin and Bergquist lost 10-5 to Lensing and Toale; Sieh and Blake Kleigl lost 10-5 to Schulz and Jones and O’Neill and Harmlink lost 10-0 to Harman and Greg Anderson.
“Both Scott and Mason played very well in singles, but Lensing and Schulz really turned on their games at the end of their matches,” said Taylor. “Most of our players started off well the first several games of their matches, but as they do so well so often, Spencer was able to make intelligent adjustments that put them over the top.”
