Spirit Lake/Okoboji ends season with 12-1 dual record
OKOBOJI — The Spirit Lake/Okoboji girls tennis team ended the 2008 regular season with a 6-3 win over Sioux City West on Saturday. The victory gives them a 12-1 record on the season with the only loss to Decorah.
SL/O was scheduled to play the Spencer Tournament, which was canceled. West stayed overnight, so the two teams met in a dual.
At the No. 1 singles, Alli Gerking took on state qualifier Madison Warder.
“I thought that Alli came out a little intimidated,” said SL/O coach Bob O’Hara. “She fell behind 5-0 and perhaps wasn’t quite sure what to do. Once Alli realized she could play at Madison’s level she played great. Alli came back to 9-8, but in the last game she feel behind 40-0 and ended up losing the match 10-8.”
At the No. 2 singles, Aubry Kolegraff took on Alexis Gerhart.
“Aubry lost 10-3, but lost some close games so the match was closer than the score indicates,” said O’Hara. “None of the other singles matches were close.”
In other singles play, Kassie Hein won 10-0 over Mell Pham; Cassidy Clarity won 10-3 over Shaena Hansen; Kara Crosgrove won 10-1 over Jolie Rich and Shirley Coenen won 10-3 over Annie Follas.
In doubles, Kolegraff and Gerking avenged their singles losses with a 10-7 win over Warder and Gerhart.
“This was Alli’s and Aubry’s best match of the season,” said O’Hara. “When they miss an easy shot at the net they’re not bothered by it, and when you’re as aggressive as they are you’ll have some easy misses. I think that they now realize that for every shot they miss at the net they’re making five good ones.”
Hein and Crosgrove won their doubles match with ease, 10-0, over Pham and Hansen.
SL/O had forfeit the No. 3 doubles match as Clarity had to get ready for prom at Spirit Lake.
