Three Laker golfers qualify for Nationals

FORT DODGE — The Iowa Lakes men’s golf team finished second behind Kirkwood at the Region XI Golf Tournament on Monday.

However, the Lakers will still send three representatives to the national tournament.

Nick Christensen, Tom Thompson and Ross Froehlich all will make the trip to the national tournament in Goodyear, Ariz., May 20-23.

Christensen had two day totals of 77 and 73 for a 150 while Thompson shot a 151 on rounds of 77 and 74.

Froehlich finished in a three-way tie for the final spot with a 153. He had rounds of 79 and 74. He then won the playoff with a par on the first hole.

Kirkwood won the event with a 593 while Iowa Lakes shot a 610 on two-day totals of 309 and 301.

The Lakers final counting score came from Andy Soper, a national qualifier from a year ago, who shot a 157. Soper shot 77 on the e first day, but carded an 80 on Monday.

The Lakers non-counting score was a 161 from Max Koster, who had rounds of 78 and 83.

This year’s Iowa Lakes men’s team set the all-time match victories record with a 50-18 record.
