LEMARS — The Spirit Lake/Okoboji boys tennis team avenged an earlier loss to LeMars with a 5-4 victory over the Bulldogs on Monday.

“The first time we played, a few of our guys played close matches, but didn’t come away with wins,” said SL/O coach Dan Taylor. “But they played excellent this time, and pulled out some terrific victories.

“Getting three singles wins was huge, because then the meet came down to whoever won 2 out of 3 doubles matches. And both our No. 1 and No. 2 2 teams played very well, and pulled out wins, and an overall victory for the team.

In singles play, Scott Maudlin took 2007 state qualifier Kyle Koth to a tiebreaker where he lost 11-10, (7-3).

In other singles play, Mason Bergquist won 10-7 over Anthony Schimek; Sam Siegh won 10-7 over Nick Gerth; Blake Kleigl won 10-4 over Tyler Petty; Mitch O’Neill lost 0-0 to Eric Janssen and Brady Harmelink lost 10-5.

In doubles, Maudlin and Bergquist beat Koth and Janssen 10-6 while Sigh and Klegl won 10-7 over Schimek and Petty to seal the team victory.

In the other match, O’Neill and Harmelink lost 10-3 to Brett Giese and Zach Lancaster.

“It is a very good thing to see the guys playing so well at this point of the season, with districts coming up in just a few days,” said Taylor.
